Using the template, we measured and cut out the required pieces and made folds in the necessary places. Then, following the image of the final product, we constructed the machine using our pieces. Finally, we drew and cut off the little cardboard man and glued it on top of the flag. Our process of building was smooth and untroubled, and the final product worked out successfully. If we were to repeat this exercise, we would measure everything out a little more precisely, so the machine comes together more smoothly. In this assignment, we learned how a cam and linkage machine works. We learned how the flag is moved up and down when the axle is turned. When the cam (the circle) attached to the axle rotates as the axle is turned, its edge pushes on the flag. Since the cam is attached to the axle at a non-center point, the length of the edge to the axle is different at different points on the cam, thus pushing the flag at different lengths, causing the flag to move up and down.
